The Opera Guild was organized in 1978 for the purpose of supporting the Granbury Opera House. Our members believe that having high-quality live theater available to us on our town square is a valuable asset to the community. Each year we have several fundraisers, with 100% of the money raised going to support and sustain the Opera House.
On the first Tuesday of each month (September through May) we gather at one of our local establishments for a special program and luncheon. We also meet at selected local restaurants on the first Friday night of each new performance for a set-price dinner before the show. The Granbury Opera House was originally built in 1886 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Known for many years as Kerr's Opera House, it featured traveling vaudeville acts, minstrel shows, singers and melodramas until it closed in 1911. After sitting empty for nearly 60 years, the curtain rose again on June 19, 1975, fulfilling the dream of a dedicated community. Since that time, it has been staging hit Broadway musicals, comedies, mysteries, and occasional original works, under the auspices of various directors and companies. Currently, the Opera House building is owned and maintained by the City of Granbury.
